Requirements:
Certified Addiction Counselor -1 (CAC-1):
  • 3,000 hours counseling experience
  • 135 contact hours of training specific to AODA issues or the Counselor Core Functions
  • 150 hours direct supervision
  • Successful completion of the:
    A. FSAC or FAODP exam
    B. IC & RC Counseling exam
    C. SPEX exam
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Recertification:

  • 20 hours per year of continuing education in the 12 Core Functions or every 2 years documenting 40 contact hours of acceptable continuing education
  • Recertification fee
  • Sign current code of ethics

Note: Effective July 1, 1999, individuals initially certified with the CAC-1 will be required to move into the CAC-II certification within a 4 year period. During the initial 2 year certification period, individuals are required to take and pass the IC & RC Counselor written exam. During the second 2 year period, individuals must have completed all requirements including submission of the application for CAC-II certification.

Certified Addiction Counselor II (CAC-II):

  • 6,000 hours counseling experience
  • 270 contact hours of training specific to AODA issues or the Counselor Core Functions
  • 300 hours direct supervision
  • Successful completion of the:
    A. IC&RC exam
    B. SPEX exam
    C. Case Presentation Method (CPM), oral evaluation
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS):

  • 2,000 hours experience working with ATOD clients with regards to the Prevention Domains
  • 120 hours of training specific to Prevention Domains
  • 120 hours direct supervision
  • Successful completion of the IC & RC Prevention Specialist written exam
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC):

  • 8,000 hours experience working with ATOD clients with regards to the Prevention Domains
  • 240 hours of training specific to Prevention Domains
  • 240 hours direct supervision
  • Successful completion of the ICRC Prevention Specialist written exam
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS):

  • Certification as an AODA/AAODA professional at the IC & RC reciprocal level or hold a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the master's level or higher
  • 5 years (10,000 hours) counseling experience as an AODA counselor. Verification of 2 years (4,000 hours) clinical supervisor experience in AODA field. These 2 years may be included in the 5 years experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
  • 30 hours training specific to CCS domains
  • Passing score:
    A. IC & RC exam
    B. Clinical Supervisor exam
  • Must be a CAC II
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Assessment and Referral Management Specialist Level -1 (ARMS-I):

  • 2,000 hours experience in ARMS performance domains
  • 75 hours training in ARMS domains
  • 100 hours direct supervision
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics

Assessment and Referral Management Specialist Level -2 (ARMS-II):

  • 4,000 hours experience in ARMS performance domains
  • 150 hours training in ARMS domains
  • 200 hours direct supervision
  • Passing score of ARMS exam
  • Sign and adhere to current code of ethics
