Recommended Curriculum

Florida Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) Credential

Florida's CAP credential is based on obtaining 350-hours of addiction specific training.  The requirements, as outlined by the Florida Certification Board, are as follows:

  • Bachelor's Degree (minimum)

  • 6,000 hours direct service (within past 10 years)

  • 300 hours direct supervision (minimum of 20 hours must be documented in each of the 9 professional practice dimensions)

  • 350 hours Education with at least 190 in the following:

o   Clinical Evaluation - 35 (20 - Assessment & 15 - Screening)

o   Treatment Planning - 20

o   Referral - 5

o   Service Coordination - 5

o   Counseling - 50

o   Client, Family and Community Education - 15

o   Documentation - 15

o   Professional Ethics & Responsibility - 30

o   Supervision - 15
 

At least 154 hours must be in the transdisciplinary foundations:

o   Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge- 77

o   Application to Practice/Professional Readiness - 77
 

At least 6 hours must be allocated in the following topic areas:·        

o   4 hours must be in HIV/AIDS

o   2 hours must be in Domestic Violence education and training

The following is a recommended curriculum developed for students using DLCAS coursework for their credentialing hours.  It is designed to meet all specifications as outlined above.  These courses have been designed to not only prepare you with the information you'll need to to work with chemically dependent clients, but also to assist you in passing your written credentialing examinations (you must earn a passing score on the Florida Specific Exam AND the IC&C AODA Written Exam).  You are always free to take any coursework from our catalog, and our staff will be happy to work with you to make course recommendations should you already have some training hours and do not need an entire 350-hours of training.
