Ethical Practice for Counseling Professionals

This 3 hour course will provide information on ethical theories, ethical principles and decision-making, and current legal issues that relate to the substance abuse field. Participants will learn how to apply this information to their practice whether in psychology, counseling, social work or other areas of client treatment. Links to other resources regarding ethics and healthcare issues are available throughout the course.  A reference section can be found at the end of the course for further reading.   

Goals/Objectives

By participating in this Distance Learning Course, the trainee will:

  1. Increase one's knowledge regarding ethical theories and principles and their application to current practice
  2. Increase self-knowledge regarding values, moral judgment and the integration of clinical theory and ethical behavior
  3. Increase knowledge and abilities in ethical decision-making

Licensed Professional Counselor

Charlotte Chapman has been in the addictions field for twenty years. She has practiced as a counselor, supervisor and program director. Charlotte has been teaching ethics for the past ten years. She has published articles and courses on ethics for addiction professionals and has served on state and national certification boards and ethics committees. Charlotte is a licensed professional counselor, a licensed substance abuse treatment provider, a certified addictions counselor and a certified clinical supervisor in Virginia. She is currently the director of training for the Mid-Atlantic Addiction Technology Transfer Center, Richmond, VA.
