Guidelines and Techniques

This Basic Series course focuses on the skills and techniques of offering family counseling services.  This course is the result of Dr. Edward's 25 years as a family professional.  It will provide you an in-depth look at the skills and strategies needed to offer systems-based services.  An excellent course for both beginning and seasoned counselors alike.   
 

Goals/Objectives

By participating in Part One of this Distance Learning Series, the trainee will:

  1. explore the fundamentals of recruiting families, doing the initial interview, and setting the stage for family counseling services;
  2. examine guidelines for working with various populations;
  3. review a variety of foundations for working with family groups in a variety of settings;
  4. identify the advantages of working systematically with families;
  5. look at cultural issues related to family work;
  6. investigate a variety of approaches to deal with special situations that occur when working with families;
  7. identify the various skills and techniques used in providing services to families;
  8. learn about the use of multiple family groups when working with adolescents and other problems in treatment;
  9. review information specific to working with chemically dependent family groups;
  10. explore treatment goals for working with family systems.


Your Course Instructor:
John T. Edwards, PhD


Dr. Edwards earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Georgia in 1977. He is an Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and has conducted and supervised family therapy for the past twenty (20) years.

He has served as director of counseling in a family health center, clinical director of an inpatient family care program, private practitioner in marriage and family therapy and co-founder of a learning center for family therapy.  Dr. Edwards has conducted numerous training events in the United States and Canada.

He is author of the books Treating Chemically Dependent Families: A Practical Systems Approach for Professionals and Working With Families. He is currently a private trainer and consultant living in Durham, North Carolina.
