Basic Training Curriculum for Drug & Alcohol Counselor Credentialing in Canada

Counselors seeking credentialing in Canada will want to work with the Canadian Addictions Counsellors Certification Board (CACCB), a member of the IC&RC Consortium.  Their basic credential is the ICADC - International Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselor.  The Board contact information and basic requirements for this credential are as follows:

Requirements:

International Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselor (ICADC):

  • 3 years full-time (6,000 hours) within the past 5 years providing direct, supervised counseling services to persons with primary diagnosis of alcoholism and drug addiction

  •  270 hours education in the knowledge and skill areas:

    Pharmacology - 20 hours
    Signs & Symptoms - 15 hours
    Human Development - 32 hours
    Counseling - 133 hours
    Special Populations - 12 hours
    Case Management - 17 hours
     Professional Ethics - 6 hours
    Any other Alcohol & Drug Knowledge Area Up to an additional 35 hours
     

  • Supervised Practical Training - must be part of the eligible work experience and may be completed under more than one supervisor or agency. The guideline is one hour of supervision for every ten hours of experience.

The following is our recommended curriculum for training in Canada (for a PDF copy to print, CLICK HERE).  These courses have been designed to not only prepare you for the information you'll need to become an effective counselor, but also to assist you in passing your written credentialing examination.    When registering for coursework, our staff will work with you to make course recommendations should you already have some training hours and do not need an entire training package (for example, if you have other educational hours or college credits already).
